As a result, you don't have to bend way down to pick up the object, and you don't have to stoop awkwardly to clear doorways. The Forearm Forklift also helps you move objects over sensitive floors--such as wood, vinyl, or tile--without the same risk of causing scuffs or damage.

Lower Back Support Belt - Small

The Lower Back Support Belt helps eliminate the danger of a back injury with a solid, firm and comfortable back support belt.

Pink Hard Hat - Bullard 6 - Point Ratchet Suspension

Bullard Pink Hard Hat is designed with a wide profile and brim, this classic hat enhances ventilation and increases protection from the sun.

Made from high-density polyethylene and is equipped with 6-point ratchet suspension.

Fibre-Metal Blue Hard Hat with 3 Point Ratchet Suspension

Fibre-Metal Blue Hard Hat with 3 Point Ratchet Suspension has a smooth shell that flexes and deflects on impact

White Hard Hat - MSA Standard V-Gard Slotted with Ratchet Suspension

MSA Standard V-Gard Slotted Hard Hat with Ratchet Suspension provides a wearer protection from a force

Kimberly Clark WypAll® X80 Blue Cloth Towels in Brag® Box (160 towels)

Patented technology allows this thick, strong wiper to absorb oil and water faster than rags or shop towels. In fact, firearm related injuries are a leading cause of death in children, and include deaths from unintentional injuries, homicide and suicide.

Between 1994 and 1998, 6,287 children committed suicide with a firearm and an additional 1,896 children were killed by unintentional gun injuries in the United States. All together, 23,776 children under age 19 died from a gun related injury during these years, which is equal to 13 children a day.
An even larger number of children are hurt by nonfatal gun related injuries. Although gun related injuries peak in adolescence, they can affect infants and younger children too. Younger children are most likely to be injured, either shooting themselves or a playmate, after playing with a gun that they have found in the home, not realizing that the gun is real or that it is loaded.
It is estimated that there are guns in half of all of the homes in the United States. Although most of these guns are purchased for safety reasons, it is important to keep in mind that a firearm in the home is much more likely (up to 43 times more likely in some reports) to kill or injure a family member or friend than an intruder.

Because of the number of injuries from guns, which many say has reached epidemic levels, programs have been developed to educate parents and children about gun safety. These include the Eddie Eagle gun safety program from the National Rifle Association, which educates children who find a gun to 'Stop! Don't Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult.' The American Academy of Pediatrics also has a 'Keep Your Family Safe from Firearm Injury' program that educates parents about gun safety and advises 'the safest thing is to not have a gun in your home, especially not a handgun.'

Prevent Injuries from Guns

Many parents incorrectly assume that their child is educated about gun safety, can tell the difference between a real gun and a toy gun, and would know not to handle a real gun. A study in the June 2001 issue of Pediatrics showed this to not be true.

In this study, 'Seeing is Believing: What Do Boys Do When They Find a Real Gun?,' 29 groups of boys aged 8-12 years were observed in a room where a gun was hidden. Many of the children found and handled the gun, and half of the children actually pulled the trigger.

Most of the children that handled the found gun and pulled the trigger had previously received gun safety education. This study helps to prove that to keep your children safe and prevent firearm related injuries, it is important to restrict their access to guns, either by not having a gun in the home or by storing it properly.

Proper storage of a gun includes keeping the gun in a gun safe, lock box, or a locked cabinet or drawer. The gun should also be stored unloaded with the bullets locked separately.

A gun put in a shoe box on the top shelf of a closet is not considered to be a safely stored gun. Neither is a gun placed under the mattress or somewhere else where your child 'would never look for it.' Children are naturally curious and if a gun is not stored properly, there is a good chance that a child may find it and injure himself or someone else.

Other steps you can take to ensure gun safety include:

Use a gun lock or trigger lock.

Make sure that your children do not have access to the keys used to lock your guns and bullets.
Teach your children to not handle guns without adult supervision.

Avoid letting your children play with realistic toy guns and nonpowder firearms, such as pellet guns, air guns, air rifles and BB guns.Even if you don't have a gun in your own home, it is important to educate your children about firearm safety in case they discover a gun outside the home or in the homes of their friends.

They should know the 4 steps of the Eddie Eagle gun safety program, including:

Stop!

Don't Touch.

Leave the Area.

Tell an Adult.

You should also discuss gun safety with other parents or family members if your child spends time in their homes. It is not enough to assume that if they do have guns in the house, then they have them stored properly.

As the American Academy of Pediatrics states in their book, 'Injury Prevention and Control for Children and Youth,' the 'risks of hangun ownership outweight the benefits.' If you have children in your house, then consider getting rid of your guns. If you must have a gun in the house, then at least learn to store it properly.

If you do decide that you want to get rid of your guns to protect your children, you can look to see if a gun 'buy back' type program is available in your area. Or call the non-emergency number of your local police department and ask if they will pick it up.

Many communities also have free gun lock and/or trigger lock give away programs.

Dirty Bombs - FAQ's

What is a dirty bomb?

A dirty bomb is a mix of explosives, such as dynamite, with radioactive powder or pellets. When the dynamite or other explosives are set off, the blast carries radioactive material into the surrounding area.

A dirty bomb is not the same as an atomic bombAn atomic bomb, like those bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, involves the splitting of atoms and a huge release of energy that produces the atomic mushroom cloud.

A dirty bomb works completely differently and cannot create an atomic blast. Instead, a dirty bomb uses dynamite or other explosives to scatter radioactive dust, smoke, or other material in order to cause radioactive contamination.

What are the main dangers of a dirty bomb?

The main danger from a dirty bomb is from the explosion, which can cause serious injuries and property damage. The radioactive materials used in a dirty bomb would probably not create enough radiation exposure to cause immediate serious illness, except to those people who are very close to the blast site. However, the radioactive dust and smoke spread farther away could be dangerous to health if it is inhaled. Because people cannot see, smell, feel, or taste radiation, you should take immediate steps to protect yourself and your loved ones.

What immediate actions should I take to protect myself?

These simple steps—recommended by doctors and radiation experts—will help protect you and your loved ones. The steps you should take depend on where you are located when the incident occurs: outside, inside, or in a vehicle.

If you are outside and close to the incident, cover your nose and mouth with a cloth to reduce the risk of breathing in radioactive dust or smoke.

Don’t touch objects thrown off by an explosion—they might be radioactive.

Quickly go into a building where the walls and windows have not been broken. This area will shield you from radiation that might be outside.

Once you are inside, take off your outer layer of clothing and seal it in a plastic bag if available. Put the cloth you used to cover your mouth in the bag, too. Removing outer clothes may get rid of up to 90% of radioactive dust.

Put the plastic bag where others will not touch it and keep it until authorities tell you what to do with it.

Shower or wash with soap and water. Be sure to wash your hair. Washing will remove any remaining dust.

Tune to the local radio or television news for more instructions.

If you are inside and close to the incident

If the walls and windows of the building are not broken, stay in the building and do not leave.

To keep radioactive dust or powder from getting inside, shut all windows, outside doors, and fireplace dampers.

Turn off fans and heating and air-conditioning systems that bring in air from the outside. It is not necessary to put duct tape or plastic around doors or windows.

If the walls and windows of the building are broken, go to an interior room and do not leave. If the building has been heavily damaged, quickly go into a building where the walls and windows have not been broken. If you must go outside, be sure to cover your nose and mouth with a cloth. Once you are inside, take off your outer layer of clothing and seal it in a plastic bag if available. Store the bag where others will not touch it.

Shower or wash with soap and water, removing any remaining dust. Be sure to wash your hair.
Tune to local radio or television news for more instructions.

If you are in a car when the incident happens

Close the windows and turn off the air conditioner, heater, and vents.

Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth to avoid breathing radioactive dust or smoke.

If you are close to your home, office, or a public building, go there immediately and go inside quickly.

If you cannot get to your home or another building safely, pull over to the side of the road and stop in the safest place possible. If it is a hot or sunny day, try to stop under a bridge or in a shady spot.

Turn off the engine and listen to the radio for instructions.

Stay in the car until you are told it is safe to get back on the road.

What should I do about my children and family?

If your children or family are with you, stay together. Take the same actions to protect your whole family.

If your children or family are in another home or building, they should stay there until you are told it is safe to travel.

Schools have emergency plans and shelters. If your children are at school, they should stay there until it is safe to travel. Do not go to the school until public officials say it is safe to travel.

How do I protect my pets?

If you have pets outside, bring them inside if it can be done safely.

Wash your pets with soap and water to remove any radioactive dust.

Should I take potassium iodide?

Potassium iodide, also called KI, only protects a person's thyroid gland from exposure to radioactive iodine. KI will not protect a person from other radioactive materials or protect other parts of the body from exposure to radiation.

Since there is no way to know at the time of the explosion whether radioactive iodine was used in the explosive device, taking KI would probably not be beneficial. Also, KI can be dangerous to some people.

Will food and water supplies be safe?
Food and water supplies most likely will remain safe. However, any unpackaged food or water that was out in the open and close to the incident may have radioactive dust on it. Therefore, do not consume water or food that was out in the open.

The food inside of cans and other sealed containers will be safe to eat. Wash the outside of the container before opening it.

Authorities will monitor food and water quality for safety and keep the public informed.

How do I know if I’ve been exposed to radiation or contaminated by radioactive materials?

People cannot see, smell, feel, or taste radiation; so you may not know whether you have been exposed. Police or firefighters will quickly check for radiation by using special equipment to determine how much radiation is present and whether it poses any danger in your area.

Low levels of radiation exposure (like those expected from a dirty bomb situation) do not cause any symptoms. Higher levels of radiation exposure may produce symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and swelling and redness of the skin.

If you develop any of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor, hospital, or other sites recommended by authorities.

Where do I go for more information? For more information about dirty bombs, radiation, and health, contact:

The Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD) at 502-227-4543
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) at 301-415-8200
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at 202-646-4600
The Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS) at 865-576-3131
The U.S. National Response Team (NRT)
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) at 1-800-DIAL-DOE

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) protects people's health and safety by preventing and controlling diseases and injuries; (2 KB/86 pages)

After an emergency, it can be difficult to find running water. However, it is still important to wash your hands to avoid illness. It is best to wash your hands with soap and water but when water isn’t available, you can use alcohol-based products made for washing hands. Below are some tips for washing your hands with soap and water and with alcohol-based products.

When should you wash your hands?

Before preparing or eating food.

After going to the bathroom.

After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has gone to the bathroom.

Before and after tending to someone who is sick.

After handling uncooked foods, particularly raw meat, poultry, or fish.

After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

After handling an animal or animal waste.

After handling garbage.

Before and after treating a cut or wound.

Techniques for Hand Hygiene with Alcohol-Based Products

When hands are visibly dirty, they should be washed with soap and water when available.
However, if soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based product to clean your hands. When using an alcohol-based handrub, apply product to palm of one hand and rub hands together, covering all surfaces of hands and fingers, until hands are dry. Note that the volume needed to reduce the number of bacteria on hands varies by product. Alcohol-based handrubs significantly reduce the number of germs on skin and are fast acting.

Techniques for Hand Washing with Soap and Water

Proper techniques to use when washing your hands with soap and water:

Place your hands together under water (warm water if possible).

Rub your hands together for at least 15-20 seconds (with soap if possible). Wash all surfaces well, including wrists, palms, backs of hands, fingers, and under the fingernails.

Clean the dirt from under your fingernails.

Rinse the soap from your hands.

Dry your hands completely with a clean towel if possible (this helps remove the germs).

However, if towels are not available it is okay to air dry your hands.

Pat your skin rather than rubbing to avoid chapping and cracking.

If you use a disposable towel, throw it in the trash.

Protect Yourself from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning After an Emergency

Never use generators, grills, camp stoves, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside your home, basement, garage, or camper—or even outside near an open window.Install a carbon monoxide detector in your house, and check its battery every time you check your smoke detector batteries.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause sudden illness and death if you breathe it. When power outages occur during emergencies such as hurricanes or winter storms, you may try to use alternative sources of fuel or electricity for heating, cooling, or cooking. CO from these sources can build up in your home, garage, or camper and poison the people and animals inside.

If you are too hot or too cold, or you need to prepare food, don't put yourself and your family at risk—look to friends or a community shelter for help. If you must use an alternative source of fuel or electricity, be sure to use it only outside and away from open windows.

Every year, more than 500 people die from accidental CO poisoning. CO is found in combustion fumes, such as those produced by small gasoline engines, stoves, generators, lanterns, and gas ranges, or by burning charcoal and wood. CO from these sources can build up in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces.

People and animals in these spaces can be poisoned and can die from breathing CO in an enclosed or partially enclosed space.

How to Recognize CO Poisoning

Exposure to CO can cause loss of consciousness and death. The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. People who are sleeping or who have been drinking alcohol can die from CO poisoning before ever having symptoms. If you think you may have CO poisoning, consult a health care professional right away.

Important Tips

Never use a gas range or oven to heat a home.

Never use a charcoal grill, hibachi, lantern, or portable camping stove inside a home, tent, or camper.

Never run a generator, pressure washer, or any gasoline-powered engine inside a basement, garage, or other enclosed structure, even if the doors or windows are open, unless the equipment is professionally installed and vented. Keep vents and flues free of debris, especially if winds are high. Flying debris can block ventilation lines.

Never run a motor vehicle, generator, pressure washer, or any gasoline-powered engine outside an open window or door where exhaust can vent into an enclosed area.

Never leave the motor running in a vehicle parked in an enclosed or partially enclosed space, such as a garage.

Basic Mold Cleanup

The key to mold control is moisture control. Even though when you push the test button on the detector the horn sounds, this is only testing the battery not the ability to sense smoke. Most manufactures recommend replacement after ten years.
Even the new models that are hardwired together throughout the house, also have batteries and these need to be changed. If the power goes out in the house and a fire starts, the unit depends on this battery to sound the alarm.

Co2 or Carbon Monoxide Detectors also have batteries that need to be changed. More and more people are installing these detectors that sense the odorless and colorless gas that comes from improperly burning fireplaces, boilers, stoves etc.

And it is a good idea to get a unit that plugs into the wall and has a read out. Installing these detectors lower on the wall is usually best, rather than buying a detector that is mounted on the ceiling. The gas will be detected sooner on the lower level.

For more information on Co2 Detectors check out Consumers Report for best picks.

Safety Equipment

I created this blog to provide links to safety products for Residential and Professional use.
